Job Description
The Science Laboratory Technician provides technical support to the Science teaching team in the delivery of learning programs for students and maintains Material Data Sheets for the College.
Specific responsibilities include:
Prepare laboratory equipment and materials in a timely manner to support science classes.
Provide technical advice and assist students and teachers with the correct use and care of equipment during science experiments, as required.
Maintain a safe and compliant laboratory environment, including the secure storage of equipment and materials.
Perform specialist cleaning of laboratory equipment and preparation areas.
Manage the safe storage and disposal of chemicals and biological residues in accordance with relevant regulations and guidelines.
Coordinate the ordering, labelling, storage, maintenance, repair, and stocktaking of science equipment, chemicals, and other resources.
Maintain and update Material Safety Data Sheets using the ChemWatch system to ensure accurate and accessible safety information.
Apply comprehensive knowledge of WHS legislation, regulations, and codes of practice to:
Identify hazardous substances and maintain an up-to-date hazardous substance register.
Prepare risk assessments for activities in preparation areas and, in collaboration with teachers, for laboratory activities.
Develop and implement effective risk control measures.
Establish and enforce safe handling, storage, and disposal procedures for hazardous substances.
Advise teachers on technical aspects of the curriculum, including safety considerations and best practices.
Desired Skills and Experience
Committed Christian who is actively involved in their local evangelical Christian church.
Experience overseeing the day-to-day operations of a science laboratory in an education or industrial setting.
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of laboratory and technical practices.
Excellent knowledge of materials used in science curriculum.
Excellent knowledge of the application of chemical and biological safety, and demonstrated safe work practices in line with Codes of Practice.
Sound written communication and verbal skills.
Demonstrated organisational skills and effective time management.
Initiative, problem-solving skills and ability to work under tight timeframes.
Ability to work as part of a team and autonomously once tasks are delegated.
Diploma or certificate course in laboratory skills or other qualification relevant to the position or equivalent experience.
Previous experience with the Risk Assessment for Australian School program is preferred.
Current Working with Children Check.
