Job Description
The Science Laboratory Assistant provides support to the Science teaching team in the delivery of learning programs for students and assists in maintaining Material Safety Data Sheets for the College.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist in the preparation and setup of scientific equipment for practical lessons.
Store, clean, and maintain equipment, including preparing chemical solutions as directed.
Restock scientific consumables and ensure proper storage in compliance with Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
Assist in maintaining clean and tidy science labs, storage areas, equipment, and classrooms through basic care, cleaning, and proper storage of materials and equipment.
Ensure all science equipment is functioning and ready for use.
Assist in the annual equipment inventory.
Assist in the monthly classroom safety checks.
Assist in the annual update of chemical Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for the entire campus.
Contribute to the provision of quality educational experiences by assisting and supporting teachers with the preparation of science equipment and materials and construct teaching aids for class demonstrations and practical lessons.
Implement and follow safety procedures in the Science Department’s work areas.
Adhere to risk assessments and apply appropriate risk control measures to ensure safe handling of equipment and chemicals.
Review and verify that all containers are correctly labelled.
Assist with special events such as Science Week and Expo Days.
Any other reasonable direction that is within the limits of your skills, competence, training and/or experience as given by your Supervisor and/or Principal.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Committed Christian who is actively involved in their local evangelical Christian church.
Strong organisational and time management skills with a consistent focus on safety.
Attention to detail.
Competence in handling and managing chemicals in accordance with safety guidelines and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
Ability to review and ensure all containers are correctly labelled, in accordance with the GHS labelling system.
Possess a working knowledge of role-specific computer programs, as well as basic computer skills, including Microsoft suite.
Physical capability to perform the tasks required, including accessing, maintaining, cleaning, and storing science equipment.
Demonstrate an ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing.
